FIFA: Wehbe hopes to consolidate achievements
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) said that coach Mohamed Wehbe seeks to build on the recent successes achieved by the Moroccan national team, in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, in a new phase that reflects growing ambitions for national football.
A report published by FIFA on its website explained that the appointment of Wehbe to succeed coach Walid Regragui, who led the “Atlas Lions” to a historic achievement in the 2022 World Cup when they reached the semi-finals for the first time in the history of African teams, raised the ceiling of aspirations within the Moroccan sports street.
FIFA added that choosing Wehbe was not surprising, given the great success he achieved with the under-20 team by winning the World Cup title in 2025, in an experience that was considered a turning point in his coaching career.
The report indicated that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation bet on the option of continuity, by hiring a coach who knows well the secrets of Moroccan football and is capable of ensuring a smooth transition between generations, especially in light of the availability of a base of young players who have shined recently.
The same source also highlighted that Wehbe, who has accumulated training experience at Anderlecht, benefits from his European background in developing talent, which is in line with the general trend of Moroccan football in recent years.
FIFA confirmed that the new coach will face great challenges, most notably the lack of time before the start of the World Cup, in addition to the necessity of creating harmony within the group, especially after the departure of a coach who left a strong mark within the national team.
The report concluded by recalling that the Moroccan national team will enter the group stage competitions within a group that includes Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti, which is what he considered a real test of the ability of the “Atlas Lions” to confirm their development and continue writing history in the global arena.
