Iran wants to play the World Cup in Mexico
Iran has proposed moving its World Cup matches from America to Mexico, due to the current war in the Middle East.
Ahmed Donyamali, the Iranian Minister of Sports, said in statements reported by the Iranian Islamic Republic News Agency, IRNA, that the ministry may study the proposal with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
“I hope that conditions will be created so that our children can eventually participate in the World Cup,” Dunyamali said.
He added: “It is important to make careful use of all sporting aspects to ensure continued possibility of participation.”
The Iranian national team is scheduled to meet Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt in the group stage, while the three matches will be held in America, which is hosting the tournament in partnership with Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
It is worth noting that, last Wednesday, Donyamali ruled out Iran's participation in the World Cup.
US President Donald Trump said the next day that it was not “appropriate” for Iran to play for security reasons; While Iran rejected this claim, stressing that decisions are made exclusively by FIFA.
