A report enumerating digital crimes in Alkan
A recent international report revealed that more than 2.1 million Moroccan credentials were hacked during the Kingdom’s organization of the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations finals, in light of a significant increase in cybercrime activity related to the sporting event.
The report, issued by Kaspersky in cooperation with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), explained that hackers used malicious software spread on the dark web to extract the credentials and financial information of users in Morocco.
The same document recorded an increase in cyber attacks between September and December 2025, as about 300 messages claiming cyber attacks were monitored, most of which were related to denial of service attacks and defacing websites.
Most of the identified websites presented themselves as service platforms that provided tickets for the African Cup of Nations or promised prizes for guessing the winning team in upcoming matches, as a cover to collect user data and payment information.
Kaspersky said that the cyber threats were targeting the tournament, its participants, and the host country in general, as the widespread interest in the major sporting competition was accompanied by an increase in cybercrime activity.
She explained that “major international events represent attractive targets for attackers, who launch attacks to exploit millions of fans through various fraudulent schemes.”
In this regard, Yulia Shlychkova, Vice President of Global Public Affairs at Kaspersky, said: “In such cases, strengthening cooperation between public and private entities is crucial to directing all efforts towards combating cybercrime and providing a safe experience for millions of attendees at these global events.”
The aforementioned company official added: “Kaspersky is proud to contribute to INTERPOL’s mission, which unites industry stakeholders in a shared commitment to global cybersecurity.”
In addition to the Africa Cup of Nations (Morocco 2025), Kaspersky has joined INTERPOL-led cybersecurity efforts related to major tournaments; Such as the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, and the 2025 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.
